Many newer vehicles include advanced driver assistance systems, often called ADAS. These may include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, parking assistance, rear cross-traffic alerts, and 360-degree camera views. These systems depend on cameras and sensors placed around the vehicle, often in areas that are easily damaged in a collision.

A front bumper may contain radar for emergency braking or adaptive cruise control. A rear bumper may include parking sensors or cross-traffic sensors. Side mirrors may include cameras or blind spot indicators. Windshields may house forward-facing cameras. Grilles, emblems, brackets, and even small trim pieces may affect how sensors work.

If a sensor was shifted, blocked, cracked, or disconnected, the repair may require scanning, calibration, replacement parts, or additional testing. Without those steps, the vehicle may look repaired but not function properly.

This is why calibration has become such an important word in modern collision repair. Calibration helps make sure cameras and sensors are aimed and operating correctly after repairs. If a camera or radar sensor is slightly off, the vehicle may misread traffic, lane markings, pedestrians, or nearby objects. The driver may not notice until the system fails to respond as expected.

Federal safety standards are also pushing vehicles further into the smart-car era. Automatic emergency braking is expected to become standard on new passenger cars and light trucks in the coming years, which means even more vehicles will depend on sensors and cameras. As this technology becomes common, repair shops must continue to invest in training, equipment, and procedures.

For drivers, this creates a new mindset after an accident. Do not judge damage only by what you can see. If your vehicle has modern safety features, the repair may need additional steps to make sure those systems still work correctly. Warning lights are helpful, but they do not catch everything. A proper inspection is the safest choice.
